Syscap launches school carbon offsetting programme

Independent IT financier Syscap has announced a programme to offset carbon emissions for all of the IT equipment that it leases to schools within the UK.

The scheme, launched on June 1, aims to offset carbon emissions in Kenya with the collaboration of the African Energy Efficient School Stoves Project. The project is run by co2balance, a specialist carbon offsetting organisation.

The African Energy Efficient School Stoves Project replaces wood fires used to cook food in Kenyan schools with stoves that are 75 percent more efficient.

While helping the environment, it also provides schools with significantly reduced energy costs, approximately half, which can be used to fund improvements to the schools as well as saving the time previously used to collect wood.

“Up until now if a school wanted to run a carbon neutral scheme for its IT equipment it would have to set up its own offsetting scheme with a carbon offsetting company, which is a prohibitively expensive and time consuming process,” said Philip White, chief executive of Syscap.

“The novelty of our this scheme is that when a school leases IT equipment through us, all their carbon is automatically offset, irrespective of the manufacturer or what their equipment actually is.”
